Unrequited love. How many of us have gone through this, just as Finduilas. How many of us can find ourselves in her?
This is not the only such story by Tolkien. In the same book, we meet Brandir, who fell tragically in love with Nienor. In The Lord of the Rings, we can feel the pain of Éowyn, who, though with great delicacy, has been rejected.
However, unlike Éowyn, the story of Finduilas ends tragically. Her broken heart was literally pierced. One would like to ask why so much suffering befell an innocent being who was already sufficiently wounded…
Finduilas, I hope you found peace in Valinor. I also hope that each of us will find our own peace and healing for wounded hearts.
